The Annual Civic Engagement Awards - 2008 Guidelines
Faculty/Staff Excellence in Volunteerism Award
- Must be nominated by Ivy Tech - Bloomington faculty, students or staff.
- Self-nomination is permitted and encouraged.
- Two (2) awards will be given unless unanimously agreed upon by Civic Engagement Committee.
- Service can be completed anywhere in the world.
- Faculty/staff must have been employed for at least one semester.
- All part-time staff, full-time staff, adjunct faculty and full-time faculty are eligible.
- Service between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2008 will be considered.
- Service must be primarily non-service learning related.
- Award may be based on:
- Description of volunteer service
- Impact of service
- Sustainability of service
- Substantiality of service (e.g. hours served)
- Reference by non profit benefiting from service (will be obtained by Civic Engagement Committee)
Student Excellence in Volunteerism Award
- Must be nominated by Ivy Tech - Bloomington faculty, students or staff.
- Self-nomination is permitted and encouraged.
- Two (2) awards will be given unless unanimously agreed upon by Civic Engagement Committee.
- Service can be completed anywhere in the world.
- All part-time and full-time credit-seeking students are eligible.
- Service between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2008 will be considered.
- Service must have been performed during semester in which student was enrolled (all summer service is eligible regardless of enrollment status).
- Student must have completed at least one semester of coursework.
- Service must be primarily non-service learning related.
- Award may be based on:
- Description of volunteer service
- Impact of service
- Sustainability of service
- Substantiality of service (e.g. hours served)
- Reference by non profit benefiting from service (will be obtained by Civic Engagement Committee.)
Excellence in Service Learning Award
- Project must be nominated by Ivy Tech - Bloomington faculty, students or staff.
- Self-nomination is permitted and encouraged.
- Two (2) awards will be given unless unanimously agreed upon by Civic Engagement Committee.
- Service can be completed anywhere in the world.
- Nominee projects must be curricula or project-based and awards can be given to multiple faculty, student and organization combinations.
- Service learning projects that have happened, or are currently happening will be considered (e.g. spring ’07, summer ’07, fall ’07 and spring ’08).
- Award may be based on:
- Description of project’s service
- Impact of service on community
- Impact on serving students
- Reference by non profit benefiting from service (will be obtained by Civic Engagement Committee.)
Jeanine C. Rae Humanitarian Award
- One (1) award will be given.
- All part-time, full-time, credit-seeking, continuing or graduating students are eligible.
- Student must have completed at least two semesters of coursework.
- Student must demonstrate outstanding humanitarian qualities (The dictionary defines a humanitarian as “a person whose attitudes and ways of life demonstrate concern for the well-being of others”).
- Award may be based on student qualities including:
- Relating well with peers
- Doing an unusual amount to help someone else
- Making contributions to the College that effect the well-being of others
- Doing volunteer work – perhaps tutoring with no compensation
- Being a morale booster or motivator – perhaps encouraging another student to complete his/her degree or certificate
- Befriending someone in need of companionship
Community Organization Partner Award (Community Involvement Award)
- Organization must be nominated by Ivy Tech – Bloomington faculty, students or staff.
- Two (2) awards will be given unless unanimously agreed upon by Civic Engagement Committee.
- Non profit must have been in existence for at least one year prior to nomination.
- Organization must be within Ivy Tech – Bloomington’s 6-county service area.
- Award may be based on:
- Description of service provided by non-profit
- Impact of non-profit’s service on community
- Sustainability of non-profit in community
- Partnership with Ivy Tech – Bloomington
